The world’s smartest man just publicly professed faith in Jesus. Is this a game-changer for Christianity? And does it signal the end of atheism?
Welcome to Provoke and Inspire, where I wrestle with culture and current events by asking, What would Jesus think? What would Jesus do?
In case you haven’t heard, Yong Hun Kim, a South Korean with the world’s highest IQ of 276, just declared that he believes in Jesus. He wrote on X, “I believe that Jesus Christ is God, the way, the truth, and the life.”
For reference, the average IQ is around 98. So this guy is incredibly intelligent. Understandably, many Christians are celebrating. And it makes sense. It’s encouraging when someone with that level of brilliance publicly follows Jesus.
But it doesn’t stop there. He also said that Christian theology, which he studied, is “the ultimate discipline of all fields of study.”
When I saw all the comments and reactions, my initial response was, “Yeah, this is cool.” But we also need to be careful not to boast.
Our culture thrives on dunking, tribalism, and scoring points. If we start treating this like a victory over “the other side,” we lose sight of Jesus. So let’s be clear about what this moment is—and what it is not.
This is not proof that God exists. We don’t have that kind of proof, and I don’t believe we ever will. That’s not how God seems to operate. He could reveal Himself in overwhelming, undeniable ways. He could write across the sky, “I am God. Believe in Me.” Atheists often ask, “If God wanted us to believe, why doesn’t He make it obvious?”
That’s a bigger topic, but in short, I think God has revealed Himself just enough to make our choice real. If He revealed Himself in a way that removed all doubt, would it produce love or just forced submission?
Back to the main point: Yong Hun Kim’s faith does not prove the truth of Christianity. But it does point to something important. It reminds us that we don’t have to check our brains at the door to follow Jesus.
Too many Christians feel like faith is separate from reason. But it isn’t. The Christian worldview is the most rational, coherent, and intellectually satisfying framework there is. We don’t have to compartmentalize.
The smartest man in the world just said he believes in Jesus. That doesn’t prove Christianity, but it does remind us that faith and reason are not enemies. They go hand in hand.
I don’t know exactly what led to Kim’s decision to follow Jesus, but I’m confident it didn’t require him to abandon logic or intellect. On the contrary, Jesus and the Christian worldview make sense of the universe. They explain origins, morality, meaning, and purpose. They offer a foundation for objective ethics and help us understand suffering and evil.
If you’re someone who feels like you have to put your mind aside to follow Jesus, let this be a turning point. You can love God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.
There are scientists, historians, philosophers, and psychologists—brilliant people—who are following Jesus with their whole being. They aren’t compartmentalizing their faith. They are energized by the idea that a rational God created this universe and invites us to discover and understand it.
So let this encourage you. Not because it proves God, and not so you can win debates. But because it reminds you that your faith is rational. You can pursue truth with all that you are.
The Christian faith is not for the weak-minded. It is for those willing to face reality, explore mystery, and seek truth without fear.
